A MEN'S football team are delighted a move to Scholes Bank means they can finally return home to Horwich.

Horwich Victoria are playing in the top-flight of the Lancashire Amateur League and they joined forces with Horwich St Marys to become Horwich St Mary's Victoria.

The club have had a great start to the season with only a 1-0 defeat on the road to Rochdale St Clements blotting their copy-book.

But prior to the result, Danny Holmes side enjoyed an opening day 3-2 victory against Old Mancunians and then followed it up with a 2-1 win against Bury GSOB last week.

The newly formed side started brightly with Luke Skelly rattling the bar just six minutes in then Danny Mills forced a great save out of Bury keeper after 10 minutes.

But they did not have to wait long to open the scoring as Johnny Shacklady slotted the ball home.

Bury tried to battle back into it and they hit the bar from close range then the levelled matters from the penalty spot after a challenge by Adam Skelly in the box

It remained that way until the break and then after the interval Bury's keeper made a fine one-handed save.

More chances fell their way but it was not until two minutes from time when man-of-the-match Mills scored from the penalty spot to take all three points.

Manager Holmes has been delighted with their record so far this season.

He said: "It is a new side as some of us manage the juniors at the Horwich St Marys but there was no seniors for them to progress onto.

"So we joined the two clubs together and we had been travelling from place to place so it is great to be back in Horwich.

"They have new pitches and being in Horwich we can attract more players.

"We have had a good start to the season but we hope to build on it.

"It is a massive thing to have football back in Horwich and we have quite a fan-base watching us so be settled in the area is great.

"Winning two our of three of our matches this season is a good start."

Horwich St Mary's Victoria take on local rivals Old Boltonians tomorrow night.
