THE incredible 7ft-tall elephant cake that wowed crowds at the food and drink festival will be donated to Bolton's most needy.

Bolton Council has given the cake, named Kimmy and created by master baker Rose Dummer, to Urban Outreach which will distribute it to two other charities in the town.

Some of the giant cake will go to Urban Outreach, another section has been sent to FortAlice, the domestic abuse charity, and Bolton Young Persons Housing Scheme has been sent some for its tenants.

Dave Bagley, chief executive of Urban Outreach, which distributes food to struggling families and individuals, said: "We were honoured to be chosen to receive some of the cake. It was very impressive and everyone who sees it has to stop and glance a second time as they just can't believe it is a cake. We are just trying to distribute it to people who would really appreciate something good out of the Food and Drink Festival.

The cake is made up of rice krispies for the legs and head, and cake for most of the body area.

Ms Dummer, also known as Rosie Cake-Diva, said: “I am really proud. When they asked me to do it in the first place I got really excited thinking about what I could do. I think in terms of anything you do that is food art, if you are doing it for something so big like this festival, in its 10th year — well it is a real honour.

“When you have gone to the trouble of making it, you want them to eat it — I want it to be ripped to pieces, I want them to eat it like piranhas.”

Cllr Cliff Morris, leader of Bolton Council, said: “We wanted people who had seen this cake being made to have some, which is why we offered pieces to the public. But we were also conscious that we wanted a local charity to benefit and there is no more deserving recipient than Urban Outreach.

“Kimmy was one of the stand-out features of the Food and Drink Festival, and we’re very grateful to Rose Dummer for her efforts. I know she was happy that the cake would be eaten, rather than simply displayed.”
