PUBLIC toilets are to be transformed into Ulverston Town Council's new headquarters.

South Lakeland District Council's planning committee agreed the toilet block at Brogden Street could be converted and enlarged to create new offices and meeting space for the 18 town councillors.

Ulverston Town Hall, where councillors used to meet, is being closed for redevelopment.

From September, town council meetings are to take place in the Supper Room at the Coronation Hall, according to the town council's website.

Ulverston Civic Society had objected to the Brogden Street plans, saying it was concerned about the loss of public loos, especially when special events were taking place. The society said there were other options for relocation.

Cllr Bharath Rajan, who is also mayor of Ulverston, urged fellow planning committee members to support the plans. "The move to this particular location has been debated for well over two years by a relocation committee, which has clarified what is possible," he said. "SLDC are the owners of this plot. The best possible solution in their view has been arrived at."

Cllr David Williams described the application as "bog-standard", to some laughter in the council chamber.

The plans, which also include solar panels on the roof, were unanimously approved.
