ADULTS are invited to join young people in going back to school next month.

Sharples School will be running free science classes for adults again this academic year after the huge success of the lessons introduced last September — which says the school equipped the students with the perfect formula for a bright and successful future.

Caroline Molyneux, head of science said GCSE science is more important than ever, with it being an essential qualification for those aspiring to become primary school teachers, paramedics and other careers.

Miss Molyneux, assistant headteacher at the secondary school, said: "The classes were a fantastic success.

"There were 15 who sat the exam with all achieving an A* to C in their exam.

"The qualification is leading to some of the adults going on to teaching and nursing — it has provided them with the next step towards what they want to do."

She added: "GCSE science is needed in a wide range of careers including primary school teaching.

"Most people have their English and maths GCSE because they know how important it is to have those subjects but do not realise that science is also needed."

The classes will take place every Monday evening, from 5pm to 7pm with enrolment and the first lesson taking place September 21.

Parents Janice Murphy and Lindsay McDonald (pictured) were two of the first parents to enrol on the class last year.

Miss Molyneux added: "It is not just for those looking to change or further their career, parents can also take part which helps their children because there is an element of competition between them."

She said: "When I first started the adult classes I was a little nervous because teaching adults is different from teaching children, it is a different audience, but it has been fun and they have enjoyed it.

"I do the lessons because, despite the late night on Monday when you do want to get home, when they get the results, they are so happy and can go on to the next stage of their life.

"I keep in touch with my students and one has gone on to become a paramedic after getting her science GCSE."
