The match organised by former Clarets defender and captain of Nelson Golf Club Ian Brennan was set up to raise money for the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation and both Blackburn Rovers and Burnley FC Former Players Association.

Brennan chose the spinal injury charity because of the support it has showed his son Jonathan, who was left paralysed from the chest down after a serious car crash on the M65.

The charity funds scientific research into curing spinal cord injury.

He said: “It was great to have friendly banter with my old players and compete against our Blackburn rivals.

“The day has gone really well and I was really happy with the turn out.

“We still don’t who has won yet or how much money was raised.”

The Former Players Association was set up by former players and supporters of Rovers to provide support and assistance in addressing the cares and concerns of the players at the club.

The football legends along with 10 other teams teed off at 1pm. Last night the scores on the doors were being totted up and the winners still to be announced.

A raffle and auction followed a dinner and presentations where Mr Kindon featured as the after dinner speaker.

Veronica Simpson, secretary of Burnley Former Players Association, said “It’s been a great day out, all the players had a great time and enjoyed the day.

“The bad weather managed to stay away, which meant all the golfers enjoyed their afternoon out.”

Proceeds of the day will be split between the three charities. Mike Milner, of Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation, said: “Support like this is vital and we’d like to thank everyone.”
