A SPECTACULAR batting collapse saw Kendal snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against lowly St Annes at Shap Road on Saturday.

South African paceman Eldred Hawken produced a potent spell of bowling to help Kendal skittle the seaside outfit out for just 72.

In reply, and with their sixth win of the season looking on the cards, Kendal lost five wickets for just three runs to be dismissed thirteen runs shy of the total in the rain-reduced 42 over match.

The result saw St Annes leapfrog Kendal into 11th place. Only Preston, who have failed to win all season, now sit below Kendal.

"We bossed the game for 75 per cent," said captain Chris Miller. "Eldred produced his best spell of the season so he was a spearhead for us in their innings.

"We were cruising when Saeed (Bariwala) and Eldred were batting then Saeed got out and it went downhill from there.

"If Eldred didn't get out just after drinks I think me and him would have seen it home quite comfortably. It was looking to be a good Saturday afternoon's work but inexperience and a good bit of bowling took its toll on us."

Holidays and injuries meant Kendal went into the match depleted as Miller handed a first team debut to 14-year-old Finlay Richardson, who has been keeping wicket for the second team.

Kendal started brightly as Miller's men got off to a good start when Adam Holt picked out Darren Nightingale with Hawken claiming the early breakthrough.

It was then 17-2 in the eighth over as Andy Kellett was caught by Herron off the bowling of Miller.

The visitors collapsed to 32-5 with Herron taking four catches and one stumping as Xander Pitchers and Matthew Taaffe both fell to Hawken, with Nathan Bolus stumped by Herron off the bowling of Miller.

St Annes were struggling on 36-7 but and Mitchell Bolus top scored with 13 to see them reach 72 before Bariwala saw off Matthew Grindley to claim the final wicket when Herron took his sixth catch in the innings.

Kendal's reply began slowly and Herron, Nightingale and Oliver Field were all back in the pavilion after 14 overs with just 30 runs on the board.

Bariwala was the leading scorer with 23, however his stay was ended when he was caught by David Watson as Kendal were left 57-4.

But then the collapse began as, with only ten players, the remaining five wickets fell in five overs.

First to go was Lewis Richardson who fell to a golden duck off the bowling off Pitchers before Hawken was bowled for 16 by Grindley.

Marcus Hill was then trapped LBW by Pitchers for 1 before Richardson (0) became Grindley's third victim as he returned figures of 3-22.

Kendal's misery was completed as Miller was trapped LBW by Pitchers, who returned stunning figures of 4-5 to give St Annes only their third win of the season.
