A BUDDING engineer was so impressed with Bury College that he travelled 1,000 miles to study there.

Tomas Standeven is from Andorra and decided to move to the UK two years ago when he was just 16 to broaden his horizons.

The youngster moved in with his uncle and aunt in Holcombe Brook and enrolled at the college to study maths, further maths and physics.

Last Thursday, Tomas discovered he had achieved two As and B, an outcome he was delighted with.

The Andorran said: "I was really shocked. I thought that I would do a lot worse.

"I'm pleased with my results though I try to never rest on my laurels. There is always room for improvement."

Tomas has applied to study engineering at Durham University in 2016 after spending a gap year working as a ski instructor in Andorra.

He added: "I've already got my ski instructor certificates and it's a good opportunity to earn money.

"In October, I''ll be spending a bit of time on a ski course in October in Switzerland to gain more qualifications and then it’s back to Andorra.

"My my dream is to study engineering and go into it as a career.

"I’ve always liked building things and finding out how things are put together, so it’s a natural career avenue for me.

"Bury College has been great. I’m so glad I picked it.

"The facilities are really good and every time I’ve asked for help, it’s always been there."
