A FAMILY is spreading a little colour for a fun run in memory of a Bolton mum.

Mum-of-one Kelly Watkinson, from Smithills, died four years ago, aged 32, from brain cancer.

This month a seven-strong team of her family are banding together to take part in the Bolton Hospice 5K Colour Run.

Miss Watkinson was cared for by the hospice in her last few days and her family is hoping to raise as much as possible for the service in her memory.

The team, who all come from Heaton, include Kelly's sisters Simone Watkinson, aged 35, Rachael Byrne, aged 27, and Chelsea Byrne, aged 29, and her brother Jordan Byrne, 31.

They will be joined by Rachael's son five-year-old Maddox, Chelsea's daughter nine-year-old Ruby Ottley and Jordan's son seven-year-old Harrison.

Simone, of Queensgate, said: "We wanted to do something as a family. We've all done separate bits, but this is something we can all do together.

"All the kids, even though they were really young, talk about her all the time. Maddox just turned one the day before she died and he talks about Aunty Kelly all the time.

"Five hundred people turned up at her funeral. She was so popular, everyone knew her."

Kelly battled cancer for four years and was cared for at the hospice before her death on June 8.

She leaves behind her 11-year-old son Ellis Crook.

This is the second year the hospice has hosted the 5K fun run which sees participants covered in a rainbow of powered paint as they make their way around the course.

Simone was the first to sign up, deciding the bright and colourful event was a great way to honour the fun and bubbly nature of her sister.

So far the family has raised £500 in sponsorship and have agreed to start and finish the 5K challenge together.

The Colour Run takes place at Queens Park at 11am on Sunday, August 30.
