EDGWORTH racing driver Callum Grant made the podium his home during an action-packed weekend at the Silverstone Classic.

The young racer battled changeable conditions to guide his Merlyn car to two third-placed finishes in the Formula Junior series.

He then teamed up with co-driver Maxim Bartell in an Elva MK7S to take 11th-place in the Historic Sports Car Club’s Guards Trophy.

Qualifying for Grant’s two individual events took place on the Friday of the three-day meeting in torrential downpours, but he still managed to claim sixth place on the grid.

In complete contrast, the famous old circuit was bathed in sunshine for Saturday’s race, but the Bolton driver showed he could master wet and dry conditions.

He got off to a flyer, quickly settling into the race to make up three places and was closing in on the Brabham BT6 of second-placed Jonathon Hughes but not in time for the chequered flag,

The wet weather of qualifying returned for the second race of the series on Sunday, which led to a mass pile-up on the opening lap.

Five cars had to be withdrawn and the race restarted, but Grant was out ahead of the carnage and unscathed.

Again, he moved up the gird from sixth to third but was unable to bridge the gap to the top two of Hughes and the Lotus of race winner Sam Wilson.

Driving partner Bartell took to the wheel for the opening section of the Guards Trophy, with the drivers swapping roles in a pit-stop midway through the 45-minute race.

Despite competing against more powerful cars, including Jaguar, Lotus, Aston Martin and TVR, the pair were able to make up seven places from 18th at the rolling start.
