A DEDICATED teacher had a great send-off surrounded by pupils when she retired after more than three decades at a nursery school.

Christine Roberts was a popular staff member at Turncroft Nursery in Darwen, and the children clapped and cheered at her farewell party.

She spent 33 years at the school on Highfield Road and is thought to have taught more than 3,000 pupils during her time there.

Celia Rushton, chair of the board of governors at the nursery, said Christine would be greatly missed.

“She’s very competent and a very caring, warm woman – and the children love her.

“She’ll be a great loss to the school and we’re sorry to see her go.

“We hope she enjoys her retirement, of course, though.”

Christine received flowers and presents on her last day as well as the good wishes of staff and parents.

Celia said: “She’s done a lot for the school over the years, especially working with children with learning disabilities.

“And she’s always entertained the children by playing the guitar at Christmas.

“She’s good fun but she also worked hard.

“Christine’s dedicated her life to the school.”

Turncroft has 100 pupils and its ethos is ‘learning and laughter’.

Last year the school was graded as outstanding by Ofsted for the third consecutive time.

Ofsted’s report stated: “Children’s outcomes are transformed at this exceptional school. They flourish and make rapid progress in their early learning.

“The achievement of the most able children and those with special educational needs is outstanding. Whatever their starting points are, each child is challenged and supported in order to achieve their potential.”

It continues: “Children take part in the many activities indoors and out with gusto.

“Their early reading, writing and mathematical knowledge is advanced in almost everything they do.

“Their very well-developed speech and language and mathematical knowledge reflects this. The behaviour and safety of children are outstanding.

“They blossom because they are clearly valued and respected as individuals.”
