TURNER Prize-winning transvestite Grayson Perry spent a day with Lancashire Police in his quest for masculinity.

The flamboyant star took to the county’s council estates with officers from the force for a new TV series.

He is exploring the work of ‘real men’, such as those on the front line in the fight against crime, and the problems they face in their average working day.

Officers were warned to be careful of what they said in ‘banter’ ahead of the filming, but one member of the neighbourhood policing team added that potter Grayson was a ‘lovely chap’.

Lancashire Constabulary confirmed the Force’s link up with Perry but the production company behind the series remained tight-lipped about what went on and Katherine Soloman, from Channel 4’s Press Office, was also keeping the day’s events a secret. The film is being made by Swan Films, a production company founded and run by Neil Crombie and Joe Evans, specialising in documentaries and factual programmes.

The team won BAFTA awards this year for the Grayson Perry: Who Are You? programme.

Neil Crombie, who is directing, said: “Grayson is interested in the traditional ideas of masculinity.

“It is all part of a forthcoming series and he will be making a series of major artworks based on what he sees.”

The artist-turned-television presenter, known for cross-dressing as his female alter ego Claire, has already joined former miners in the North East for the documentary at the 131st Durham Miners’ Gala.

In May a Darwen firm’s tiles became one of the stand-out features of Perry’s newest, and craziest, home.

Architectural Terracotta, formerly Shaws of Darwen which manufactures bespoke tiles, was tasked with creating thousands of individually-made ceramic nipples by Perry for A House For Essex.

The property was built in homage to the ‘special character and unique qualities’ of the county.
