THOUSANDS of people descended on Cark Airfield to attend the annual Cumbria Steam Gathering.

Ancient engines, monster trucks and even a steel band were on show as revellers basked in the sunshine on the first day of the two day event.

Three generations of the Harrison family attended to show off their steam roller, bought for £10,000 38 years ago but now worth well in excess of £250,000.

Stuart Harrison, 69, who bought the steam engine 38 years ago, said: "It's a wonderful and great day. I've been coming here since 1974. It was built in 1912 and in 1922 the government introduced higher tax laws so most were destroyed but this one survived."

Angelica Martins, from Cartmel, attended with her two children.

She said: "It's got everything here from ghost trains to old-fashioned cars. It's such a unique show and the kids love everything here."

The steam gathering continues tomorrow (Sunday, July 26).
