SEAN Dyche admits he already has a successor in mind to Jason Shackell after the defender completed his move to Derby County.

Shackell took the armband after leaving the Rams for Turf Moor in the summer of a 2012, signing a four-year deal under then boss Eddie Howe.

He has left the club with 12 months of that contract to run as the 31-year-old returns to Pride Park.

But Dyche said the prospect of appointing a new captain would not come as a surprise.

“That’s something you’re always aware of,” he said.

“You’re always alive to that situation.

“It’s nothing to do with Jason — whether he was here or not, he can’t go on forever, so you’re always mindful of who’s next, who’s coming up, who’s growing into that type of role.

“We’ll think about that in due course.”

Dyche said he was not yet prepared to reveal the identity of a new skipper.

Neither is he planning to drop any hints at this stage of pre-season, with the Clarets facing his former club Chesterfield, at the Proact Stadium today.

“I doubt it will be revealed (today),” he said. “The armband got thrown around about six times at Rangers the other night.”

With just two weeks before the start of the season, Dyche is focusing on all aspects of their game in order to have his players fully prepared for the opening day trip to Leeds United, and beyond.

“These games are important, we want that winning mentality and we enjoyed that the other night,” said the Burnley supremo.

“But really it’s still getting players fit mentally and physically.

“We are adding in the tactical understanding.

“We adjusted it at half-time against Rangers because it wasn’t right, and we reminded the players of what they needed to do and that worked very well in the second half.

“By the time we get to the Bradford game (next Saturday), which is for Duffo (Michael Duff’s testimonial), that game is really where it’s formulating.

“There might still be changes beyond that but it’s fair to say that starts looking more like your line-up (for Leeds).

“We might even squeeze another local friendly in there for anyone who needs minutes in the week leading up to the season.”
