MUSLIMS across East Lancashire have been celebrating Eid over the weekend.

Thousands of people have spent the last four weeks fasting for 19 hours a day, but on Friday Ramadan came to an end, with the three-day Eid celebrations beginning.

People gathered across East Lancashire, mostly with friends and family, to share food together in daylight hours, with prayers at Mosques beginning from 6am.

Abdul Qureshi, chairman of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, said: “Eid is always an important time for Muslims in East Lancashire and I hope everyone has enjoyed the celebrations.

“People go to Mosques to pray in the morning and then usually gather at friends houses in the afternoon to share food.

“I don’t know of many public events going on, more often it is at people’s houses, but there was an event in the park in Nelson and I hope that was successful, the weather was good for it.”

In Blackburn Corporation Park staged a two-day fun fair to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

The Eid in the Park event was held in Walverden Park, Nelson, with hundreds of people attending.

Cllr Mohammed Iqbal, the leader of Pendle Council, said the weekend had been a busy one for himself.

He said: “The event on Friday was popular and it was for people who were celebrating on that day.

“when you’ve been fasting for a month it’s nice to share Eid with everybody.

“On Saturday we had friends and family come to us from 6am until midnight, so it was hectic.”
