EX-WANDERERS star Kevin Davies is looking to re-unite some of his former legendary team-mates together in one team to take part in a showpiece event next month.

Ivan Campo, Stelios Giannakopoulos and Jay-Jay Okocha are the names who will live long in the memory on the terraces at the Reebok Stadium and Davies want them to show off their talents in a match against the Manchester futsal select team at the National Cycling Centre velodrome in Manchester.

The match will bring the curtain down on the Warburtons Futsal Cup which involves local teams from the Bolton, Bury and District Football League battling it out for honours.

Davies said: "We have been discussing how to raise the profile of futsal and struck up a relationship with the Manchester futsal club.

"We had a bit of a laugh by saying how good it would be to get a team of ex-Wanderers players there.

"Then I thought it would it would be brilliant to have a celebration of the event with ex-pros and top futsal players in teams.

"It would be great for the young players who have been competing to be able to see us in action.

"I have spoken to Jay Jay and he said he would be up for it while I am also talking to Stelios and Ivan about it and they want to play too.

"Lee Trundle is well-known locally and he is interested too.

"Now I am just trying to ring around to ring around to find out some top futsal players to come who are young and more physically up to the demands of the sport," he joked.

Futsal is a variation of association football that is played on a smaller field and mainly played indoors.

It can be considered a version of five-a-side football but the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines and walls or boards are not used.

Also it is played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football and create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

Davies believes the pilot in Bolton has been successful.

The 38-year-old striker, who helped Preston join Wanderers in the Championship next season, said: "To be the best nationally in sport, the kids have to better technically and I think futsal will help that.

"It is an alternative to football which develops them with games.

"We have been having two hour training at ESSA Academy and futsal that can improve their technique and the kids love it.

"This is a pilot in Bolton which along with ESSA is superb and during the winter it can be played in sports halls.

"We are always looking for schools and other places with indoor facilities which we can use in future to offer to more kids.

"We have 24 teams competing in three leagues which has taking place on Saturday and Sundays and they are loving it.

"As a league we have raised the profile as 24 of us have done the futsal course and have competitive leagues."

With captain Davies pulling the strings there has been one obstacle and he wants local businesses to come on board to help make it happen.

He said: "Jay-Jay wants to be there but it is going to be costly to get him over from Nigeria.

"If any firms want to help fund it and we will arrange for them to meet Jay Jay and also have dinner etc but it would be great for him to show his skills."

The match will take place on July 19 and starts at 5pm. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £1.50 for children and can be purchased from www.manchesterfutsal.com.
