And teachers and staff at the school took to the stage as part of their own special way of raising money for the youngster.

The Ormerod Road school decided to have a cabaret night to raise money for Luke’s ongoing treatment and to help his parents, Sarah and Ben – who attended on the night – with their travelling costs to and from Liverpool.

PE teacher John and accelerated progress teacher Sam Tasker got the laughs as they did a version of Barbie Girl by Aqua, which involved Mr Kelly donning a blonde wig, tight dress and red lipstick that ended up all over his face.

The female PE staff at the Burnley school did a dance number, while there was a Grease mega-mix by teachers and the office staff took to the stage in cheerleading outfits.

A school spokesman said: “The students also did their bit with James Targett having the audience spellbound with his piano recital while there was music from the shows, tap-dancing and more.

“The night ended with headteacher Richard Varey being involved in a rendition of Mustang Sally.

“Luke’s parents have also said they will be showing a DVD of the night to him in hospital.”

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton donated a pair of signed gloves for the raffle – and by a sheer twist Clarets-supporting dad Ben Mason won them.

Another former footballer Claret David Eyres donated a Joe Hart signed framed photo while other companies also stepped forward to help with the fundraising. They included David Fishwick, Exercise for Less, Perry’s, Millercare, Lifestyle Fitness, Warburtons, Bowker BMW, Boots, Sycamore Farm, florists, bakeries and Vincenzo’s restaurant.
