MORE than 100 people took part in a candle-lit walk held to mark the first anniversary of the death of a Pendle teenager.

James Goodship’s family and friends gathered on Monday night by Lake Burwain in Foulridge for an emotional walk around the reservoir, holding jars containing tea lights.

Seventeen-year-old James, from Colne, died after he got into difficulties whilst riding on a makeshift raft with a group of friends at the lake.

After the walk, which was organised by his family, his loved ones released floating tributes across the lake and read out tributes to the youngster. His mum Mel also placed a single red rose into the water.

Lancashire Telegraph:

His dad Pete Goodship said: “At least 100 people took part in the walk, mainly family and friends but also some members of the community who came to show their support.

“It was a very emotional night, we are very grateful for all the support we have received.

“After we walked around the lake we released lotus flowers made out of paper with tea lights placed in the middle on to the water.”

Tonight his family are launching a new youth club called ‘Goodship’s Gaff’ at The Citadel in Market Place Colne.

The Citadel is already home to a memorial garden in his name, and now the building is being opened up on Wednesday nights for people aged 16 to 24 year-old as a place to gather.

The venue features a games room with pool table and table football and giant bean bags, a tuck shop, TV, X-Box and karaoke machine.

Pete said: “After we finished the memorial garden, Greg who owns the Citadel started knocking through the upstairs and started turning it into a games room.

“We really wanted to give something back to James’s friends who have been a huge support to us, so it’s really for them, but anyone else who wants to come and use the facility is more than welcome.”

“There isn’t really anywhere for young people in Colne to get together so it was really important to us.”

Goodship’s Gaff will be open on Wednesday nights.
