CHILDREN in Stacksteads celebrated the official opening of an £85,000 new play area with the borough mayor and a soccer match.

The rejuvenation of Western Park, on Western Road, was led by Stacksteads Countryside Park Group working closely with Haslingden-based community enterprise, Proffitts CIC.

A total of £85,000 was raised to refurbish the area on Western Road.

A number of grants were secured and youngsters sponsored walk around the park to contribute £500.

The park’s new kick-about surface, fencing and play equipment was officially opened by Rossedanle Mayor Tom Aldred on Wednesday.

Pupils from Fearns Community Sports College, who planted bulbs, were invited for a 5-a-side football match and pupils from Holy Trinity Primary School who designed the park logo got to play on the equipment.

Pupils, residents and funders were invited for a celebration lunch on the park. Communications Officer for SCPG Jackie Oakes said: “This was a community-led project from the start beginning when local youths complained the old football pitch in the park wasn’t fit for purpose.

“We then had fundraising when residents sold raffle tickets and children did a sponsored walk. At the opening, neighbours provided facilities for hot drinks and Fearns played a display 5-a-side match.

“Cohen’s Chemist also raised funds for additional seating on the park. It’s great when everyone gets involved in this way.”

Proffitts director Martin Proffitt said: “ It was a pleasure for Proffitts to have worked on this project with Stacksteads Countryside Park Group, along with local children and residents.”

The refurbishment includes a multi-use sports area, a climbing frame, a zip line, and a community garden.
