A MAN faces a £255 bill after he pleaded guilty to throwing a cabinet off a bridge into the canal.

Anthony Marsden, 26, of Kiln Court, Chorley was fined £35 and ordered to pay costs of £200 and a victim surcharge of £20 by magistrates.

The court was told that an off duty Environment Agency officer had seen a Volkswagen car, with its boot open, parked on the canal bridge at Cowling Brow.

He saw two men remove a large object from the boot which they swung over the bridge and threw into the Leeds Liverpool canal.

They then got back into the car and drove off.

The officer took photos of the object which was still visible from the bridge as it had fallen to one side of the canal, and he contacted police.

Marsden was interviewed under caution by officers from Chorley Council and confirmed it had been a cabinet from his home that he and his friend had thrown in the canal.

He said he wasn’t thinking, admitted he had been stupid and wished to apologise for the fly-tipping.

Councillor Paul Walmsley, who over sees environmental protection at Chorley Council, said: “Mr Marsden’s lack of thought has resulted in a criminal conviction for him and a large bill to pay.

“It would have cost him nothing to take it to the tip.”
