A TEN-YEAR-OLD Blackburn schoolgirl is adding new strings to her bow after smashing Lancashire Archery Association’s long held record.

Charlotte Hempsall broke the record for a girl in her age group at a recent inter-counties match against Cheshire in Warrington.

The Westholme pupil also shattered three club records, including one in which she scored four tricky six-gold ends, at shoots with the Bowmen of Pendle and Samlesbury, where she is a member.

Charlotte, from Pleckgate, who took up the sport just 18 months ago, has proved she really is on target to become a pro-archer.

Dad Robert said: “She is a natural and she really enjoys it.

“It all started after we attended a country house open day at Hoghton Tower when Charlotte was eight.

“There was a £3 for five shots archery stall and £15 later I realised we’d have to find a local club for Charlotte to practice.”

Charlotte is now a member of the Lancashire Junior Archery Squad and trains three times a week, as well as studying for her SAT exams.

The youngster was one of four club members who were part of the winning county team at the Junior FITA and Metric Open championships where she took a winning gold medal.

Robert added: “She’s working really hard and her scores are starting to show that, but she wouldn’t have made it this far without the help she’s had from people at the club.

“Whether it’s sorting her technique or some encouragement, everyone is always so supportive.

“Charlotte is very consistent and will normally get 90 per cent of the points available shooting from distances of 30m.”

Her success has also inspired her dad to take up the sport.

He said: “I started shooting in January but I’m rubbish. I’m regularly shown up by my 10-year-old.”

Di Clarke, chairman of the Bowmen of Pendle and Samlesbury, said: “We’re delighted with Charlotte’s success.”
