FOR those wishing to get out for a fun family day in East Lancashire this weekend there are whole host of events taking place.

And with the weather predicted to be dry with temperatures in the early teens on Saturday and Sunday – there should be plenty of enjoyment to be had.

Gisburn Scarecrow Festival takes place throughout the village this weekend.

As well as the village being decorated with numerous scarecrows there will be various events over the two days including a jumble sale, an open air pizza oven, a raffle, plus awards for best scarecrow and an award for winner of the trail.

This year’s theme is ‘Countries’. Guess them all and you could win a prize between 10am and 4pm.

The third annual outdoor strongman competition in aid of East Lancashire Hospice returns to Darwen town centre on Saturday.

Competitors will travel from all over the country to compete in five different challenges set by the organisers, Mill Gym. The day will also feature fun for all the family with a tombola, children’s slide, summer raffle and music.

Everyone is welcome to watch the feats of strength and donations will be collected from spectators for the hospice.

The fun starts at 10am until 3.30pm in Darwen Market Square.

Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club also host their 10K walk, 5K walk and 5K fun run in aid of East Lancashire Hospice and Rossendale Hospice from 11am, beginning at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel.

For those adults who enjoy a pint or two of real ale Moorhouses Brewery in Burnley are hosting their 150 anniversary beer festival from noon until 8pm on Saturday.

On Sunday the Olde England kiosk in Darwen in holding a family fun day. For children this includes a pirate and princess fancy dress competition at noon.

Also on Sunday families can join Pendleside Hospice’s family friendly event ‘Little Hospice Heroes’ where hundreds of children will walk a three mile route around Towneley Park in Burnley.

Around 500 children are expected to walk on the day.

The event is for children 12 or under and they must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the event.

The marshalled three mile route will start at 11am with registration opening at 9.30am in the hospice marquee.

Other events over the weekend include television star Joey Essex at Turf Moor for the Soccer Six game on Sunday and the Batcave, Lower Cockcroft, Blackburn is hosting a gaming day in aid of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation.
