A BRIDE broke her leg badly when she tripped on her wedding dress while dancing at her reception.

Nichola Newton’s dream day turned into a painful nightmare, which left her needing an operation to have pins and a plate inserted in her left leg.

It also led to her and husband Jonny missing their dream honeymoon in Mexico.

Instead the new bride spent nearly two weeks in hospital, including having lengthy surgery on her 29th birthday.

At the time, Nichola, carried on with her wedding day celebrations, not realising the seriousness of her injuries.

She even took to the dancefloor in a wheelchair and numbed the pain with Jagerbombs.

Nichola, from Ewood, said the she had enjoyed ‘a perfect wedding day’ on Thursday, April 2, prior to the tumble at Park Hall Hotel, near Chorley.

She had earlier married her partner of ten years, Jonny Newton, 33, at the hotel.

Nichola, who works in sales at Chorley-based Euromedia Associates, said: “Everything had gone as I’d dreamed, the weather was beautiful and we had shared a memorable day with my family and friends.

“We had cut the wedding cake and had the first dance together at around 9.30pm.

“My feet were killing me so I kicked off my shoes and decided to have a dance.

“It certainly wasn’t the best decision I’ve ever made.

“I remember my left foot catching the inside of my dress and down I went.

“I tried to get up but struggled. My friends told me it was like that scene in Bambi.”

After being helped up Nichola carried on the party.

“I was uncomfortable but didn’t realise how serious it was. I was given a wheelchair and took it on the dancefloor and everyone danced around me.

“I also had one or two extra Jagerbombs to numb the pain.”

Nichola was later helped to the bridal suite by her chief bridesmaid Hayley Easton and her new husband.

“It wasn’t a pretty sight, I was sat in the bathroom while Hayley struggled to get my dress off,” she said.

The following morning it became apparent that her injury was more serious than first thought.

“When I woke up I could barely move and I was taken to Chorley Hospital.

“I was told I had a long fracture down the middle of my tibia and I needed surgery.

“They inserted a plate and four screws into my leg and I spent 12 days in hospital.

“Jonny and I were supposed to fly to the Hard Rock Hotel in Cancun, Mexico for our honeymoon on the Sunday but instead I was coming out of surgery with a cast on my leg.”

The couple were first told that they would lose out on their holiday but a local travel agent intervened.

Marina Marsh, manager of the The Holiday Shop, Feniscowles, said: “They were told nothing could be done and would lose all the money paid due to the fact that they were travelling two days later.

“Eventually we found someone at Thomas Cook who understood and we managed to change the holiday over to September.

“Nichola and Jonny are a lovely couple and we are over the moon to have put a smile back on their faces after what must have been like a nightmare.”

Nichola, who is now recuperating at home, says she can look back on the events of the day and see the humour. “It wasn’t ideal but we’ll certainly have a barely believable story to tell about the day we got married.”
