SEVERAL market traders will don bee costumes in memory of a much-loved former colleague, as they take part in a fundraising 10-mile walk.

Ken Brennand, a market trader for more than 35 years, ran the Honeybees stall at Darwen Market with his wife Jean, selling ladies’ clothes and accessories.

He died from cancer in October last year.

Gwen Sangster, market operations manager, will be part of the 16-strong team taking part in Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s annual fundraising Walk in the Dark on April 25, alongside other traders and members of Ken’s family.

The late-night walk, between Chorley Hospital and the Royal Preston, starts at 9.30pm.

Gwen, a veteran of the walk, said: “Ken was a lovely, kind man. He was a gentleman, very generous with his time and always ready to help others.

“I walked it last year but in 2012, about a dozen of us from the market took part as Ken’s brother Robert was being treated at the Rosemere Cancer Centre in Preston. Sadly, he passed away within weeks of Ken in November last year.”

A Rosemere spokeswoman said: “As well as the traders, Ken’s daughter Ruth, son Marcus and grandson William will be taking part in the walk.

“Former colleagues and customers of Ken, who wish to sponsor the market bees, can do so by calling in at the market office in the annexe or leaving a donation at Honeybees.”

Rosemere Cancer Foundation fundraises to bring world-class cancer treatment and services to local cancer patients via their local hospital and the cancer centre in Preston.

It also works to provide free access to complementary therapies for all those going through treatment and to make the surroundings in which treatment is given more patient-friendly.

To join the walk, telephone Rosemere on 01772 522913 to request an entry form or register via its website at rosemere.org.uk.

Entry costs £10 per person, which includes a Rosemere goody bag, certificate and finish line refreshments.
