A WOULD-BE robber who tried to force a 92-year-old man to hand over cash left empty-handed.
The offender knocked on the man's window in Albert Street, Brierfield, at 2.30pm on Tuesday.
When his victim opened the door, the man forced his way in and began to demand money, but the pension-er began to call police and the thief ran away.
Sergeant Mick Nicholls, of Nelson police, said: "Fortunately, there was no violence involved and the elderly man had the presence of mind to do the right thing and pick up the phone.
"He was not injured, but obviously very shocked. Targeting elderly people in this way is a despicable crime and we are anxious to catch the person who did this."
He was described as a white, about 30, and slim, with brown hair. He was wearing a dark top and navy trousers.
