AN East Lancashire transport company is playing a key role in providing replacement coach services in the wake of Friday's fatal train crash.

Fraser Eagle, which is based in Shuttleworth Mead Business Park, Padiham, is the sole coach contractor working with Virgin Trains to shuttle passengers between Preston and Carlisle.

A large stretch of the west coast main line remains closed between Lancaster and Carlisle after the Virgin train from London Euston derailed near Kendal on Friday night.

An 84-year-old woman from Glasgow died in the incident.

Fraser Eagle said they were working very closely with Virgin in providing the replacement bus service.

A Virgin spokesman said: "Fraser Eagle are one of our contractors and whenever we need replacement coach services we go to them.

"We have got a large number of coaches to shuttle between Carlisle and Preston and then Lancaster, Penrith and Oxenholme.

"We are liaising with Fraser Eagle and assessing the situation and need on a day to day basis. They are hiring in other coach firms to meet the need, they are doing the hard work in many respects."

According to Virgin, the track would be closed for the remainder of this week. Other rail operators such as GNER were accepting Virgin tickets bought prior to the crash.
