A MOTORIST has been charged with causing the death by dangerous driving of a pedestrian who was helping clear up after an accident.

Michael Parker, 61, of Preston New Road, Mellor Brook, died on November 11 after being struck by a car which allegedly mounted the pavement yards from him home.

Sajjad Munawar, 27, of Deepdale Road, Preston is due to appear in court later this week charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Parker, a retired factory worker of the former Cupal Ltd, King Street, Blackburn, was a keen crown green bowls player and supporter at Highfield Bowling Club, Highfield Road, Black-burn.

Born in the Infirmary area, he spent many years caring for his sick mother at their home in Leach Street, and married Barbara 16 years ago.

The couple met in the same class at the former Christ Church Primary School, Blackburn.

Mrs Parker said he would be remembered for the "gentleness and the kindness" he showed to elderly neighbours.

The accident sparked calls for traffic calming. Lancashire County Council has promised to take action.

An investigation was launched after complaints that the police could have prevented the fatal crash, had they not left the scene following the earlier smash.

A spokesman for the Independent Police Complaints Commission said they were managing a Lancashire Consta-bulary investigation into their actions around the recovery of the vehicle an earlier accident on Preston New Road.

Munawar is due appear before South Ribble Magistrates on Thursday.
