A ROAD safety charity has attacked new zero tolerance measures aimed at stopping motorists using mobiles phones while driving as 'half-hearted'.
New legislation that comes into force today means drivers will now get a £60 fine and three points on their licence if caught using a mobile phone at the wheel.
The punishments have been increased from a £30 fine.
Brake, the road safety charity said the half-hearted' penalties will do little to deter drivers from using their mobile illegally.
It is calling for even tougher penalties and says the fine should fine be raised to £1,000.
Charity chiefs also believe police should be given the power to confiscate mobile phones and wants the law extended to include hands-free mobile phones.
