Authentic medieval tents were erected, Knights saddled up, the castle walls echoed with the glancing of sword on shield; as the crowds stepped back into the 12th Century and lapped it up! More than 3,000 people turned out to immerse themselves in a re-enactment of medieval life, fittingly performed at the grade 1 listed Lancaster Castle.

Organised by local historical re-enactment society, Historia Normmanis, the two-day event gave an insight into medieval living.

Visitors wandered in and out of campaign tents, discovering life on the battlefield, including the Earl’s Pavilion.

Crowds where entertained by medieval musicians, birds of prey, armoury displays, a shire court, and a fashion show modelling the entire range of Norman society from the lowest ranks to the highest.

Families even involved themselves with ‘have a go’ Archery and make your own coin. Medieval justice was served as sons and daughters placed parents in the stocks for some light-hearted cabbage throwing retribution.

Lancaster Castle will soon be visiting a near era in history with preparations for this year’s Lancashire Witch Trial anniversary from August 15-17 well under way.
