A CARNFORTH schoolgirl has made it through to the regional finals of the UK’s largest singing competition for teenagers.

Megan Stanford has the opportunity to perform at London’s O2 arena if she makes it through to the finals of Teenstar UK.

The 14-year-old has been playing guitar for eight years, after receiving one for her birthday, and started singing at secondary school.

Her trademark now is performong acoustic versions of dance tracks by artists including David Guetta and Calvin Harris.

Her first public performance came last year when she played at an outdoor fair in Bolton-le-Sands.

“It was really scary,” she said. “I didn’t quite know what to do with myself and I wasn’t great at public speaking.

“I still get nervous before I perform but it’s not as bad now as it used to be.”

Since that first show Megan has performed at the Lancashire Youth Awards, both the Lancaster and Barrow Christmas light switch-on events and alongside former X Factor contestant Paul Akister and Britain's Got Talent contestants Steve Hall and Re-Connected at Lancaster Grand Theatre.

The Carnforth High School pupil is also set to record a video with music channel Ont’ Sofa next month.

She discovered the Teenstar UK contest in a magazine, saying, “I showed it to my mum and it turned out she had already entered me for it!”

Megan, who hopes to make a career as a singer and musician, will perform at the regional Teenstar UK finals in Liverpool on March 9.
