A LEADING Burnley councillor has hit out at ‘unfair and disproportionate’ Government cuts that will have a ‘massive impact’ on the people of Burnley.

The council is looking to save a further £2.1million from its budget for 2013/14, but has said that key regeneration projects such as the redevelopment of Manchester Road train station, the Todmorden Curve and the Weavers Triangle will still go ahead as planned.

The council is also planning on getting the electronic information boards at the bus station turned back on this year.

Coun Mark Townsend, the executive member for resources and performance management, said: “We are in a period of major change and uncertainty when it comes to Government funding.

“We are being hit with unfair and disproportionate funding cuts that will have a massive impact on the people of Burnley.

“We are trying to share the burden of those Government-imposed austerity measures across the whole community and service users. The spending growth has been paid for by an uncompromising drive to find savings this year.

“We’ve been prudent this year so we can pay for these vital projects in the coming year."

The council will discuss the savings at a meeting of the executive at the town hall on Monday February 18.
