TWO Roman Catholic Cardinals and 32 Bishops will be at the head of a full house at St Peter's Cathedral, Lancaster, on Monday for an historic religious rite.

Fr Michael Campbell will be ordained a Bishop in a ceremony not seen in the city for almost half a century.

It is 46 years since a bishop was ordained in St Peter's - and in addition Fr Campbell is the first Augustinian Friar to be ordained in England since the reformation of the 16th century.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor (Westminster) and Cardinal Keith O'Brien (Edinburgh) will be among the high profile guests along with Archbishop Faustino Sainz Munoz, Papal Ambassador to the Court of St James.

Another 32 bishops from England, Wales and Ireland and around 200 priests and deacons will watch as Fr Campbell is ordained by Bishop of Lancaster the Rt Rev Patrick O'Donoghue.

The Cathedral will be filled to capacity with representatives of every parish in the Diocese, and with some family and friends of Fr Campbell.

Admission to the ordination is by ticket only but in the evening Bishop Campbell will preside at Solemn Vespers in the cathedral at 6pm, during which he will offer his first homily as a bishop.

He begins his ministry as co-adjutor Bishop of the Lancaster of Diocese. He will live at St Mary's, Barrow, until the retirement of Bishop O'Donoghue in the summer of 2009, when he will move to Lancaster.
