Link road decision faces challenge

A CHALLENGE has been mounted into the decision to allow the Heysham to M6 link road.

One un-named person has lodged an appeal with the Secretary of State for Communities, Hazel Blears MP, against the link decision announced last month.

The Citizen understands that the challenge relates to the environmental impact study carried out into the road.

Lancashire County Council only heard about the threat last week but believes there is no cause for concern.

A statement from County Hall says: "The challenge is against the decision made by the Secretary of State and the county expects the Secretary of State to vigorously defend it.

"For itself, the county council is considering its position as an interested party and will respond to the challenge, as appropriate, in due course."

After years of wrangling, work to build the road, which will cut from Heysham through Torrisholme and to the motorway, is due begin in January 2010.

The 4.8km dual carriageway will connect the current A683 Heysham link to a fully remodelled junction 34 on the M6 motorway near Halton.

The road will have intermediate junctions and a combined footway and cycleway along it.

Twenty-three major structures will need to be built including bridges over the West Coast Main line railway, Lancaster Canal and the River Lune.

It is expected to be completed 2012.

John Gow, of pressure group Transport Solutions for Lancaster and Morecambe, says they are in support of the appeal - although not directly involved.

"It is an individual appeal and we have provided some funding to support it."

I thought the Citizen supported the Western Link road? For someone who has just seen their preference rejected, Citizen Smith is doing lot of crowing.
