Morecambe

Morecambe

Morecambe Bay

Just a couple of miles outside of Lancaster is Morecambe, which has a fantastic five-mile stretch of promenade along the sea front – where the now world-famous Eric Morecambe statue can be found.

The resort offers a perfect opportunity for visitors and residents alike to soak up the fresh sea air and take in all the traditional trimmings of a coastal resort from cafes, arcades, rock and bucket and spade shops. The regeneration taking place in Morecambe is phenomenal and recent features to the resort include a poetry path, which runs through the popular festival market car park, and features sayings, poems and literary extracts about the environment and bird life in the bay – which is a great place for bird spotting.

The stone jetty features themed pavement games and sculptures along the way. There are a series of play parks for youngsters along the promenade – starting at the West End down towards Bare – and Happy Mount Park is a haven for the family with it’s play areas, both indoor and outdoor, a splash park, sports areas and café and picnic areas.

Heysham

Heysham Head

The historic village of Heysham – twice gold winner of the Britain in Bloom small village award – is worth a visit firstly for it’s history and culture and secondly of the panoramic views across the bay from Heysham Head.

The history of the village goes back to early Christian days and the ruined chapel on Heysham Head is thought to have been the place where St Patrick first preached in England.Lots more information is available from Heysham Heritage centre where there is always someone helpful on hand.

Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands and Hest Bank

Carnforth Station

Heading towards the Cumbria border is the market town of Carnforth. It’s railway station was the location for the classic love story 'Brief Encounter'.

And a walk along the canal from Hest Bank to Bolton-le-Sands is one of the best canal walks to be had as the panaromic views across to the Lake District and Warton are fabulous.
