Lancaster is one of the most historically important fortresses in Britain. Educated guided tours take visitors around the Shire Hall, where the trial of the Birmingham Six took place in the 70s and into the dark cells, where visitors can see implements of torture from the past. Lancaster Castle hosted the trials of the Pendle Witches and a tour of the castle reveals the story of how the condemned were led through the city on their way to execution in the Golgoth area.

The Lancaster Canal at 41 miles in length is the longest stretch in the country. Though the canal was once busy with cargoes from Kendal, Preston and Lancaster, it has only just been connected to the national waterway network by the Millennium Ribble Link. A waterbus now runs on the canal and people can take a trip between Carnforth and Lancaster by canal, with connecting bus and train services.
