The medieval castle, Ashton Memorial and the Millennium Bridge bear witness to what makes this vibrant city tick. The castle is still a working building, home to crown courts and a high security prison, but guided yours give an insight into life behind the walls and also throw light on the famous trials of the Pendle Witches held there is 1612.

Narrow Georgian streets surround the castle and contain a mass of attraction for visitors, from the historic Priory church, Judges Lodgings, two museums and interesting shops, and restaurants leading down the St George’s Quay, which is especially worth a look at when the sun is setting down the Lune. There is the picturesque Williamson Park, home to the Ashton Memorial and attractions include the tropical butterfly house.

But as well as being steeped in history, Lancaster, the ancient capital of the ‘Red Rose’ county, has a thriving cultural scene with acclaimed theatres and popular galleries housing a range of art genres. It also has a rich choice of dining and drinking establishments.

Glasson Dock

Glasson Dock

Opening in 1787, Glasson Dock was at one point the largest port in the north west, importing cotton, sugar, spices and slaves from Africa and the Indies. Glasson is still a thriving port and sees hundreds of thousand tonnes of cargo arrive annually.
