Horrible Histories star Laurence Rickard has revealed they have Damian Lewis’ children to thanks for landing him and wife Helen McCrory for their new movie Bill.

The team behind the hit children’s TV show have given William Shakespeare the Horrible Histories treatment in their new film, and Helen stars as Queen Elizabeth I while Homeland’s Damian plays explorer Sir Richard Hawkins.

Laurence said: “Damian was on our wishlist and at the time he was just doing Homeland and about to do Wolf Hall and so we thought we’d never get him.

“And basically their children recruited Damian for us. They said, ‘Oh come on, mummy’s doing it.’ So thanks.”

But co-star Ben Willbond, who co-wrote the film with Laurence, confessed he got a little starstruck acting opposite Damian.

He said: “I did the opening scene with Damian, I kept looking across the hall and thinking – this is a great film, he’s so true, he’s like jumping out of the screen.

“So I was like, ‘Uh-oh, I’m in the scene with him. I’d better start acting!’ It was quite something.”

Bill is in cinemas now.
