Rod Stewart joined The Late Late Show host James Corden for the latest edition of Carpool Karaoke, where they had a chat about Rod’s rock’n'roll life and sang along to classic songs from across the 70-year-old’s career.

And rapper ASAP Rocky popped up from the back seat to mouth along to his single Everyday, which features Rod. It was an unusual trio, but left the 36-year-old host gushing: “I don’t know if I’ve ever felt as cool as I do in this moment in my life, right now”.

Rod revealed that his penchant for destroying hotel rooms when he toured with his band The Faces was because, “We weren’t getting the respect we deserved” – for example, not getting room service despite paying for hotels.

The Faces were banned from all Holiday Inns, “So we used to check in as Fleetwood Mac – not that they were particularly well behaved – and it worked.”

He explained: “We’d announce that we were having a party back at the Holiday Inn on stage and everybody would flock back. We let most of the girls in, not all of the men. There’d be hundreds and hundreds.”

In a particularly tender exchange, James ran his fingers through Rod’s famously spiky hair – which supposedly takes just 10 minutes to style in the morning – calling it, “a beautiful moment between two open-minded, broad-minded guys”.

Rod and James sang along to The First Cut Is The Deepest, Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? and finally Maggie May, with Rod adding some air guitar.
