Coronation Street is gearing up for more heartbreak for poor old Fiz Stape as her young daughter is set to be diagnosed with cancer.

Hope, four, was found to have a hole in her heart, but will get even worse news when tests show she has neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer.

According to the Daily Mirror, the soap’s bosses have spoken to charity the Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance as well as families affected by the rare cancer, which only 100 UK children are diagnosed with each year, to give an accurate portrayal in the storyline.

A source said: “Producers have gone to great lengths to understand as much about this cancer as possible. They want to portray accurately and sensitively what must be a very distressing time for parents and sufferers alike.

“These will be some of the most heart-wrenching scenes ever seen on the show.”

Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz, has just returned to work after giving birth to her first baby, Albert, six months ago, whose umbilical cord blood she donated to the Anthony Nolan Trust in aid of patients needing stem cell transplants.

She said: “The hospital was brilliant. The staff looked after me and all the other mums so well. I’m in awe of them.

“Albert got a little vest saying, ‘I’m a born lifesaver’. It’s amazing to think he could help save someone.”

Hope has had a dramatic life so far – she arrived prematurely during Corrie’s live 50th anniversary episode and was kidnapped by murderer father John Stape who later fell to his death from a roof shortly after handing her back to Fiz.
