The director of hit TV drama Wolf Hall has spoken to writer Hilary Mantel about making another series based on the as-yet-unfinished third book in her historical trilogy.
The BBC2 show, which merged Mantel’s Booker Prize winning novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, starred Mark Rylance as Thomas Cromwell and Emmy-nominated Damian Lewis as King Henry VIII.
It was a critical hit and pulled in an average audience of more than four million viewers.
Peter Kosminsky, whose career includes making the acclaimed drama Warriors, told a Royal Television Society (RTS) event he had been surprised by the success of Wolf Hall.
In an interview reported in the RTS magazine Television, he said: “It broke box-office records and had the best set of reviews of anything I have ever done. I don’t think any of us anticipated what was going to happen.”
Asked about making a follow-up with the author, he said: “We’ve spoken to her about it and the book is going well but it’s not going to be a short one.”
Mantel’s third book, which has a working title of The Mirror And The Light, continues the story of Cromwell’s rise from lowly origins as a blacksmith’s son to the heart of Henry VIII’s court as his closest advisor.
