Pinocchio could be given the live-action treatment, according to reports.

The 1940 movie about a wooden marionette who dreams of being a real boy is being rewritten by Peter Hedges, reported Deadline.

The original story, based on Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel The Adventures Of Pinocchio, tells the tale of the wooden puppet whose nose grows longer every time he lies.

Pinocchio has been remade several times in the past, coming to life in cartoon and live-action versions.

It would be the latest Disney film that could be remade with live actors for the big screen, following in the footsteps of Cinderella, Maleficent and Alice In Wonderland.

Other movies in the pipeline include Beauty And The Beast, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau, Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton and Mulan.

But Pinocchio could face competition from Guillermo del Toro’s darker spin on the story, a stop-motion animated 3D movie which has been in the works since 2008.
