Coronation Street star Les Dennis has revealed that he would love to make a return to stand-up comedy.

The comedian and actor plays Michael Rodwell in the ITV soap, but started his career on the comedy circuit and told BBC Radio 5 Live that he would like to go back to his roots.

He said: “I would like to maybe do a retrospective thing, you know, maybe looking at clips and then talking about it and doing some stand-up routines about being an older dad. Looking back at those days, that’s where I started, so yeah it would be nice to get back and do some stand-up.”

But Les said in his interview with the Phil Williams Show, which will be broadcast tonight, that he was having a great time in soapland.

He said: “I’m loving it, I really am. I’ve always been a fan of Coronation Street, all my life.

“I used to do half of the cast in my act along with Dustin Gee (his comedy co-star). We used to do Vera and Mavis, sort of famously. So to actually now be working on the cobbles and playing Michael Rodwell, it’s a dream come true. We have a great laugh, so yeah, I’m having a great time.”

Les Dennis plays Michael in Coronation Street, who has cardiomyopathy and is Gail’s (Helen Worth) love interest (ITV)

Dustin died of cardiomyopathy, the same condition that Les’s Corrie character has, and he admitted it added extra responsibility to the role.

He said: “Michael’s condition is cardiomyopathy and it’s a sudden death syndrome. So it’s a really responsible storyline that we have to get right.

“Dustin died of cardiomyopathy. He had a different type of cardiomyopathy but it’s interesting that I worked with somebody who was so close to me and was living life to the full, too much to the full I think, and he collapsed with that and died.”
