EastEnders resident Kat Moon will seek help from a nun, following a suicide bid, according to reports.

The market trader, played by Jessie Wallace, has been through some challenging times and will try to find comfort from a religious sister, played by veteran actress June Whitfield.

According to the Daily Star Sunday, Kat turns to the sisterhood and checks into a convent called Sylvester House after she tries to commit suicide by taking an overdose in an attempt to deal with her troubled past.

The abuse she suffered at the hands of her uncle Harry Slater resulted in the birth of her daughter Zoe, played by Michelle Ryan.

But her estranged husband Alfie (Shane Ritchie) finds her in time and rushes her to hospital, in scenes to be shown on the BBC soap in April.

The show’s bosses have been working with the National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC) to show the effect such abuse has on Kat as she gets older.

Dr Jon Bird from NAPAC said: “It has been very encouraging for me that the script team at EastEnders has gone to the trouble of contacting an organisation working with adult survivors of sexual abuse to check this storyline and raise awareness of this difficult issue.”

Kat, who gave birth to twins Eric and Ernie last summer, has faced a lot of setbacks over the last year. Her relationship with Alfie hit the rocks after they lost the Queen Vic, and she was left with life-changing burns when Alfie torched their home in an attempt to claim the insurance.

An EastEnders insider said: “This is the start of a huge new storyline for Kat. She’s been knocked down so many times in life and always gets up.

“But it will all become too much for her. Everyone has a breaking point and Kat reaches hers.

“Once she recovers from the overdose she wants answers about her past. That’s where June’s character comes in. She plays a nun and Kat hopes she’ll provide her with the answers she needs,” the source added.

June will appear in a single episode in May.

She said: “I have watched EastEnders for years, and have been so impressed by the standard of acting. It was an absolute delight to work with Jessie Wallace and I am very excited to be part of the show.”
