The Scarface reboot has resurfaced after a new scriptwriter was signed to the project.

Plans to remake the cult 1983 movie – which starred Al Pacino as Tony Montana, a Cuban gangster ruling Miami – have been in the pipeline since 2011.

Now the Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Universal has signed Straight Outta Compton writer Jonathan Herman to rewrite the script.

Pacino’s Scarface movie was a reboot itself, as the first Scarface film was released in 1932, starring Paul Muni as an Italian taking over Chicago.

The new film will be set in Los Angeles and explore an immigrant’s rise in the criminal underworld.

Chilean producer Pablo Larrain will direct Scarface.

It was previously rumoured Rihanna is a big fan of the Pacino classic and is keen to take on the lead female role of Elvira Hancock, who was played by Michelle Pfeiffer in the 1983 movie.
