Hollywood action star Matt Damon has been confirmed to star in fantasy epic The Great Wall.
The film, to be helmed by House Of Flying Daggers director Zhang Yimou, is set in 15th-century China and revolves around an elite force of soldiers making a last stand for humanity against mythical creatures on the other side of the famous Great Wall.
Matt had previously been linked to the project, and now Variety reports he has signed up along with Willem Dafoe and Game Of Thrones star Pedro Pascal.
Chinese stars Andy Lau, Jing Tian, Zhang Hanyu, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Lin Gengxin, Zheng Kai, Chen Xuedong, Huang Xuan and Wang Junkai are also among the cast in the Legendary Pictures production, which will be the largest film ever to shoot entirely in China for global distribution.
Matt is said to be a big fan of Zhang’s, so he is thought to have juggled his filming schedule to make sure that they can work together.
Tony Gilroy helped write the final draft of the film, and has worked with Matt before as he scripted the Bourne films. The story comes from an idea by Legendary chief Thomas Tull and World War Z screenwriter Max Brooks.
Newcomers Yu Xintian and Liu Qiong will also appear in the movie.
Production is set to begin in China at the end of March 2015.
The project has been in the pipeline for some time. Henry Cavill was previously attached to star, with The Last Samurai’s Ed Zwick at the helm.
