Is there anything in the world more predictable than an Oscars red carpet interview? The mic is thrust in some poor actress’s face followed almost immediately by the question: “Who are you wearing?” The interviewer will then invariably turn and share some awkward banter with the actress’s husband/boyfriend/male co-star, and the pair will shuffle off.

But is this tried and tested formula a thing of the past? Campaigners behind the #AskHerMore movement certainly hope so.

Reese Witherspoon even helpfully posted some sample questions for interviewers on her Instagram account.

And for a while it all looked very promising, with E! presenter Ryan Seacrest cracking out all sorts of questions.

Not everyone was convinced Seacrest could keep it up though. Early congratulations were tinged with suspicion.

It’s fair to say that Ryan’s wide-ranging variety of questions weren’t always on point.

And then this happened…

But where Ryan sometimes failed at the red carpet chat, a lot of the stars seemed more than willing to step up to the #AskHerMore challenge.

Overall the campaign seems to have made for some better quality red carpet discussions – even if we do now have far too much information on Naomi Watts’ breakfast habits.

One thing’s for sure, Reese Witherspooon knew exactly the direction she wanted to take her interview on the night.
