Since 1929, the Hollywood elite have gathered to celebrate the cream of the crop at the Academy Awards and, over the years, there have been more than a few laughs, gasps, tears and tantrums.

We’ve compiled some of the most controversial, laugh out loud and jaw-dropping moments in the history of the Oscar Awards with hope the 87th Academy Awards will be just as brilliantly captivating.

1. Gwyneth Paltrow’s weepy winner’s speech

As soon as Jack Nicholson announced Gwyneth Paltrow had bagged Best Actress for her role in Shakespeare in Love, the actress burst into floods of happy tears.

She continued to cry her way through a three-minute speech that wasn’t short of teary gulps and gasps, as she thanked the world and its wife for their utmost love, support blah blah.

But hey, who could blame her – it was her first Academy Award and she’d beaten the likes of Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett to get her hands on it.

2. Cher’s outrageous wardrobe

Cher was known as a bit of a trend-setter in the 60s, rocking hippie chic with her bell-bottoms, bandanas and long black hair.

Though it seemed she’d lost her touch by the time the singer-turned-actress stepped out in this Disney villainess-inspired get-up, turning heads for all the wrong reasons.

3. The 70s streaker

It was suggested the indecent incident was a stunt, yet the moment a streaker interrupted David Niven flashing more than a peace sign will forever be etched into our memory.

Props to the suave David who never lost his cool, making light of the situation saying: “Well, that was bound to happen.

“But isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings.”

4. James Cameron’s Titanic takeover

The 1998 Oscars saw an impressive statue sweep from James Cameron and his ridiculously successful film Titanic.

James has never been known for his subtlety and it showed when he collected the award for Best Director.

After thanking his “killer cast” and an array of co-workers, friends and family, the director signed off by screaming that infamous Leo DiCaprio line… “I’m king of the world!”

5. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s ridiculously cute speech

The ceremony erupted into cheers when Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won Original Screenplay for their work on Good Will Hunting and it was at that moment the duo became household names.

The childhood friends looked absolutely overwhelmed, before both hugging their mums (their dates – awww) and co-star Robin Williams before taking to the stage to make the most endearing speeches.

6. Questionable Jolie love

Angelina Jolie’s performance in Girl, Interrupted earned the actress her first ever Oscar nomination and when she took to the stage for her gracious speech, eyebrows were raised when she said she was “so in love” with her brother.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, though when a gothed-out Angelina was caught kissing her brother Jamie passionately on the lips at the after parties, people were left rather confused about what ‘brotherly love’ really meant.

7. Jennifer Lawrence’s rather unfortunate trip

It was hard not to laugh when Jennifer Lawrence famously tripped over the stairs, attempting to get on stage to collect her Best Actress award for Silver Linings Playbook.

What was even more endearing was her response to the press later, when asked what was going through her head when she fell.

“What was going through my mind when I fell?

“A bad word that I can’t say, that starts with ‘f’!”

8. Martin Scorsese’s belated win

One of the most prolific directors to date had missed out on a handful of Oscars before bagging the award for Best Picture for his 2006 film The Departed.

The auditorium burst into applause as Martin finally received recognition for his cinematography skills, collecting the award from his long-time friends Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg

“Could you double-check the envelope?” he quipped as he got his hands on the statue.

9. Chris Rock vs Sean Penn

Oscar host Chris Rock managed to ruffle a few feathers at the 77th Academy Awards after he mocked Jude Law, asking: “Who is Jude Law? Why is he in every movie I have seen in the last four years? Even if he’s not acting in it, if you look at the credits he makes the cupcakes or something. ”

While Jude Law didn’t seem to appreciate the joke, Sean Penn didn’t take too fondly to it either, putting his two pence in when he got on stage to present an award later in the night.

“Forgive my compromised sense of humour. But I just wanted to answer our host’s question about who Jude Law is…

“He’s one of our finest actors.”

10. Marlon Brando makes a statement

It was inevitable that Marlon Brando was going to bag the Best Actor award in 1973 for his role in The Godfather but when he did, he didn’t even turn up to receive it.

Instead he sent Sashim Littlefeather who graciously thank the academy for the award on his behalf, before stating he wouldn’t be accepting the award because of “the treatment of the American Indian in motion pictures and on television, and because of the recent events at Wounded Knee”.

11. The Brody and Berry kiss

When Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his stunning performance in The Pianist, he took full advantage of his shining moment when he collected the statue.

Before he even started thanking a single person, he pulled award presenter Halle Berry into a tight embrace before passionately kissing her as the audience cheered.

12. That selfie

This was the year the selfie landed in Hollywood.

Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres gathered an array of A-Listers including Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, uploading it straight to Twitter.

By 6am it had been retweeted more than two million times and broke the record set by President Barack Obama as the most retweeted post EVER.
