EastEnders fans have been left confused by whether Max Branning revealed daughter Abi as Lucy Beale’s murderer last night, or simply fluffed his lines.

Jake Wood plays Max in the BBC soap which included live scenes as part of the first episode in a week of 30th anniversary specials, in which Lucy’s killer will be revealed.

But when Max spoke to youngest daughter Abi about the murder last night, viewers were unclear as to whether he said, “She knows you killed Lucy,” or “She knows who killed Lucy”.

The killer is set to be revealed by the end of Thursday’s episode.

Meanwhile, Jake has been telling The Sun that he hopes his character didn’t do it because he doesn’t want to be out of a job.

He said of the speculation over the storyline: “It’s all I’ve been getting for the past year. People have to believe me when I say I don’t know, because I genuinely don’t. Sometimes I tell them it was Dot, just to get them off my case.

Sorry? No one’s quite sure exactly what Max said to Abi (BBC)

“I’m desperate to find out, I’ve been asking anyone I can, but everyone is keeping schtum. I had a few theories but now I’m just confused. I thought it was Abi Branning, then Max, then I was convinced it was Ian Beale.”

Jake went on: “It would be interesting if it was Max. But if it is, potentially I’d be out of a job. I could be a fugitive, I could be filming scenes from Cuba or something.”

Saying that he wasn’t sure Max had it in him to be a murderer, he added: “I think the biggest shock would be if it was Ian Beale. As a viewer, that would be massive.”
