Ahead of the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, we roll back the years to reveal the past winners who have basked in the glory of the bagging the coveted price.

1974

Actress Jean Stapleton won an award for best actress in a comedy for the television series All In The Family at the 31st Annual Golden Globe Awards. She was presented her with the trophy by Christopher George at the event in Beverley Hills.

1975

Gena Rowlands can’t contain her excitement as she poses for photographers after winning a Golden Globe. She received the best motion picture actress in a drama award for her role in A Woman Under The Influence.

1976

Film director Milos Foreman laughs it up with Louise Fletcher, the star in his film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, after they both won Golden Globes for best motion picture and best actress presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

1977

Who knew Arnie was so handsome? Here he’s posing with a Golden Globe awarded to him for best acting debut in a motion picture in male category for Stay Hungry.

1978

It’s awards galore as Michel Douglas, centre, poses with Neil Simon and and Herbert Ross. Simon and Ross proudly display their Golden Globe trophies during the star-studded ceremony after their film The Goodbye Girl received great critical success.

1979

Actress Dyan Cannon was honoured for best supporting actress role in Heaven Can Wait. Co-star Warren Beatty also won a Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy and the film went on to win best comedy or musical at the 36th Golden Globe awards.

1980

Singer Bette Midler proved her credentials as a serious actress when she won two highly sought-after awards for best motion picture actress in a comedy or musical and the new female star of the year for her part in The Rose.

1981

German star Nastassja Kinski shows off her gong at the 38th annual Golden Globe Awards after being honoured as best actress for her role in Tess. The film was directed by Roman Polanski and based of Thomas Hardy’s 1891 novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

1982

Tinsel town superstars Barbara Bel Geddes and Linda Evans pose with their awards after they tied as best actress in a television series for their respective roles in hit TV dramas Dallas and Dynasty. Barbara played matriarch Miss Ellie Ewing in Dallas while Linda Evans became a household name as dutiful wife Krystle Carrington in Dynasty.

1983

Dynasty’s success continued in the following year when John Forsythe and Joan Collins accepted Golden Globe awards for best actress and actor in a dramatic television series for their roles as Blake Carrington and Blake’s ex-wife Alexis. Joan’s performance was seen as one of the main catalysts in the fledgling show’s popularity that rivalled Dallas.

1984

British actor Michael Caine looks thrilled with his best actor award for his role as university professor with a penchant for the bottle in Educating Rita. However his stellar performance failed to win him an Oscar a few months later.

1985

One of Hollywood’s most glamorous actresses of the time, Faye Dunaway won her Golden Globe award for best actress in miniseries or television film for her role in Ellis Island. This was her second of three Golden Globe awards.

1986

Who can forget the flashy detective Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice? Don Johnson, father of 50 Shades Of Grey star Dakota Johnson, proved that he was more than just an 80s pin-up boy after winning a Golden Globe for his role in the popular cop series.

1987

Moonlighting co-stars Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis kiss for photographers after they both won Golden Globe awards for their roles as private detectives.

1988

Silver-haired Hollywood hunk Clint Eastwood won the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an honorary Golden Globe award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. He is flanked by British director and actor Richard Attenborough.

1989

Best known for playing Ellen Ripley in the Ridley Scott and James Cameron’s Alien franchise, actress Sigourney Weaver is a seven-time Golden Globe nominee who won best actress awards for her roles in Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl. She consequently became the first person ever to have won two acting Golden Globe awards in the same year.

1990

Upcoming star Julia Roberts won critics’ approval and a Golden Globe for her performance as diabetic woman Shelby in Steel Magnolias. However it was her oversize Giorgio Armani men’s suit that was the talk of the town. According to Armani employees, Julia was determined to wear something that was as comfortable as her then-beau Kiefer Sutherland’s outfit.

1991

British actor Jeremy Irons holds his Golden Globe award after winning best performance by an actor in a motion picture his dramatic role in Reversal Of Fortune.

1992

Jodie Foster holds her Golden Globe award after winning the best actress role for her portrayal of FBI agent Clarice Starling in psychological thriller Silence of the Lambs.

1993

Al Pacino is well known for playing mobsters on the other side of the law (Michael Corleone in The Godfather and Tony Montana in Scarface) but it was his performance as cantankerous and blind alcoholic Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade in The Scent Of A Women which won him a Golden Globe and consequently an Oscar. He has won two Golden Globes since then.

1994

Co-stars Jerry Seinfeld and co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus look positively happy with their Golden Globes after winning awards for their roles in hit sitcom Seinfeld. Dubbed as the ‘show about nothing’, Seinfeld went on to become so popular that, in 2013, the Writers Guild of America named the comedy show the Number Two Best Written TV Series of All Time only second to The Sopranos.

1995

Iconic film Pulp Fiction took visual storytelling to a new level and won writer and director Quentin Tarantino his first Golden Globe for his screenplay.

1996

After years of struggling as an actor, Brad Pitt finally won his first major award for best performance by an actor in a supporting role for 12 Monkeys at the Golden Globes. Till date, this is his only Golden Globe award as an actor.

1997

Pop princess Madonna holds her Golden Globe award for best musical or comedy actress which she won for her role as Evita Peron the film Evita.

1998

Angelina Jolie may have vowed to give up acting, but in the 90s, she was at the top of her game. Here’s Angie licking her best supporting actress award for a miniseries or movie made for television for her role in George Wallace.

1999

Gwyneth Paltrow took home the best actress in a motion picture gong for her role as tomboy Viola de Lesseps in Shakespeare In Love at the 56th annual Golden Globes in Beverly Hills.

2000

Actress Halle Berry celebrates her award for best performance by an actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for television during the 57th Golden Globe Awards. Berry won for her performance as lead actress in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.

2001

George Clooney shows off his award for best leading actor in a comedy for his role in the film O’ Brother, Where Art Thou? A four-time Golden Globe winner, Clooney is tipped to receive Cecil B. DeMille Award at Golden Globes this year.

2002

Moulin Rouge made burlesque popular in the noughties and gave Nicole Kidman an award for best performance by an actress in a motion picture for comedy and musical. A nine-time nominee, Nicole has taken home the award three times.

2003

She was nominated for the award twice for her role as Rachel Greene in Friends and won the best TV Actress in 2003. Jennifer’s among a list of nominees for this year’s Golden Globes for her role as Claire Simmons in Cake.

2004

Sarah Jessica Parker poses with her award in the press room at the 2004 Golden Globe Awards. This is her third of the four Golden Globes she received for the hit HBO series Sex And The City.

2005

British actor Clive Owen poses with the award he won for best supporting actor for his work in Closer at the 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

2006

Medical drama Grey’s Anatomy was Sandra Oh’s fast track to fame. The actress, who played Dr Cristina Yang in the ABC series, won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a series, mini-series or television movie in 2006.

2007

Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan brought Sacha Baron Cohen global fame. He won a Golden Globe for best actor in a musical or comedy for his role as Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev.

2008

This one’s a bit different. Presenter Brooke Anderson announces Jon Hamm as the winner of the Golden Globe for best actor TV series drama for Mad Men at a news conference for the 65th annual Golden Globe awards. The awards event, honouring the best in film and television of 2007, was cancelled due to the Writers Guild Of America strike and, instead, the winners were announced at a conference on January 13.

2009

In 2009, Slumdog Millionaire surprised everyone by winning four Golden Globe awards. Here director Danny Boyle joins actors Freida Pinto and Dev Patel with the award for Best Motion Picture-Drama. The film went on to win eight Oscars.

2010

The Good Wife first aired in September 2009 and won Julianna Margulies her first Golden Globe award. Her stellar performance as the wife of a cheating politician has also earned her a nomination this year.

2011

Glee star Chris Colfer holds up his award for best supporting actor TV role after winning everyone over with his performance as openly gay Kurt Hummel in the musical TV series.

2012

A four-time Golden Globe winner, Claire Danes’s convincing performance as bi-polar CIA agent Carrie Mathison bagged her a Golden Globe for best actress in TV series. She is back again on the list of nominations this year to battle it out with Julianna Margulies.

2013

Anne Hathaway poses with the award for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a motion picture for her role in Les Miserables. Anne shaved her head to play the role of poverty-stricken Fantine and showcased her singing talents.

2014
