Things maybe a little different now than they were 40 years ago but the Golden Globes have stood the test of time.

Ahead of the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, we roll back the years to reveal the past winners who have basked in the glory of the bagging the coveted price.

1974

1979

Actress Dyan Cannon was honoured for best supporting actress role in Heaven Can Wait. Co-star Warren Beatty also won a Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy and the film went on to win best comedy or musical at the 36th Golden Globe awards.

Singer Bette Midler proved her credentials as a serious actress when she won two highly sought-after awards for best motion picture actress in a comedy or musical and the new female star of the year for her part in The Rose.

1981

German star Nastassja Kinski shows off her gong at the 38th annual Golden Globe Awards after being honoured as best actress for her role in Tess. The film was directed by Roman Polanski and based of Thomas Hardy’s 1891 novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

1982

Tinsel town superstars Barbara Bel Geddes and Linda Evans pose with their awards after they tied as best actress in a television series for their respective roles in hit TV dramas Dallas and Dynasty. Barbara played matriarch Miss Ellie Ewing in Dallas while Linda Evans became a household name as dutiful wife Krystle Carrington in Dynasty.

1983

Dynasty’s success continued in the following year when John Forsythe and Joan Collins accepted Golden Globe awards for best actress and actor in a dramatic television series for their roles as Blake Carrington and Blake’s ex-wife Alexis. Joan’s performance was seen as one of the main catalysts in the fledgling show’s popularity that rivalled Dallas.

1984

British actor Michael Caine looks thrilled with his best actor award for his role as university professor with a penchant for the bottle in Educating Rita. However his stellar performance failed to win him an Oscar a few months later.

1985

One of Hollywood’s most glamorous actresses of the time, Faye Dunaway won her Golden Globe award for best actress in miniseries or television film for her role in Ellis Island. This was her second of three Golden Globe awards.

1989

Best known for playing Ellen Ripley in the Ridley Scott and James Cameron’s Alien franchise, actress Sigourney Weaver is a seven-time Golden Globe nominee who won best actress awards for her roles in Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl. She consequently became the first person ever to have won two acting Golden Globe awards in the same year.

1990

Upcoming star Julia Roberts won critics’ approval and a Golden Globe for her performance as diabetic woman Shelby in Steel Magnolias. However it was her oversize Giorgio Armani men’s suit that was the talk of the town. According to Armani employees, Julia was determined to wear something that was as comfortable as her then-beau Kiefer Sutherland’s outfit.

He has won two Golden Globes since then.

Co-stars Jerry Seinfeld and co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus look positively happy with their Golden Globes after winning awards for their roles in hit sitcom Seinfeld. Dubbed as the ‘show about nothing’, Seinfeld went on to become so popular that, in 2013, the Writers Guild of America named the comedy show the Number Two Best Written TV Series of All Time only second to The Sopranos.

2008

This one’s a bit different. Presenter Brooke Anderson announces Jon Hamm as the winner of the Golden Globe for best actor TV series drama for Mad Men at a news conference for the 65th annual Golden Globe awards. The awards event, honouring the best in film and television of 2007, was cancelled due to the Writers Guild Of America strike and, instead, the winners were announced at a conference on January 13.

2009

In 2009, Slumdog Millionaire surprised everyone by winning four Golden Globe awards. Here director Danny Boyle joins actors Freida Pinto and Dev Patel with the award for Best Motion Picture-Drama. The film went on to win eight Oscars.

2010
