Victoria Wood has said she hates comedy panel shows – comparing them to zoos and saying she’ll never go on one.

The BBC has tried to address the all-male line-up of comedy shows, saying that they will always have a woman on them.

But the comedian has dismissed the format, claiming no “sane” woman would want to even go on one.

“I think panel shows are just like a zoo, really. I don’t think any sane woman would ever want to be on them,” Victoria, who recently appeared on The Great Comic Relief Bake Off, said.

“They’re just a separate thing and they’re not anything to do with comedy, they’re to do with competitiveness and testosterone and I don’t think they’re interesting…

“On [Bake Off] I was competitive, but if I hadn’t won, I wouldn’t have minded. That’s the difference.”

Victoria, who recently wrote and directed BBC musical That Day We Sang, joked of choosing her future projects: “I’ll always have one of my own projects on the go and if other things come in, I think, ‘Will that be a laugh or not?’

“If I think it will be a laugh, and if I can wear a flat shoe, then I might do it. I can’t wear stilettos. I’ve got a bunion, so I have to be careful!”

That Day We Sang is available now on DVD and digital download.
