Have you noticed your social media turning a shade of teal blue in the last 24 hours?

You’re not the only one. A host of musical heavyweights have changed the colour of their social network profiles and cover photos to show support for Jay-Z ahead of the rapper-turned-businessman’s streaming service being unveiled tonight.

Jay Z bought Swedish tech company Aspiro earlier this year, one of whose services is music streaming site TIDAL. The deal was worth $56 million (£37.8 million), and today will see the announcement of what Jay-Z has planned for the service, which will no doubt be looking to take on the likes of Spotify.

TIDAL currently has two service options advertised on its site – the higher priced of which comes with high definition audio and video. It’s priced at $20 a month – double the price of Spotify Premium.

What exactly Jay-Z has planned for the service is still unknown, but the announcement is said to show a “commitment to a new direction for the music industry from both a creative and business perspective”.

Rival services, including Spotify, are likely to tune in with interest.
